Duluth School Board approves contract for facilities project manager
ICS Consulting Inc. of Minneapolis was approved to be the project manager for the facilities project that would relocate those currently housed in Historic Old Central High School and build a new transportation center.

The Duluth School Board Wednesday approved a project management contract to relocate those at Historic Old Central High School and to build a new transportation center.
The School Board voted 6-1, with member Sally Trnka voting no. The contract is with ICS Consulting Inc. of Minneapolis. Compensation is based on the percentage of the total cost of the project. For example, if the project cost $31.5 million, ICS would be paid about $3.2 million. ....

The Duluth School Board approved setting the 2021 payable levy at the maximum Tuesday night.
The School Board set the preliminary levy at the maximum in September. Duluth Public Schools CEO Cathy Erickson gave a presentation during the truth in taxation hearing Tuesday night. The district will see a slight increase in payable taxes from 2020 compared to 2021 $40,089,645.79 in 2020 to $40,663,003 in 2021.
Erickson said the increase is due to a levy decrease adjustment stemming from 2017 coming off of the levy. In 2017, there was an error in reported enrollment that resulted in the district receiving more money than it should have, so the levy was adjusted down as part of a correction to the overpayment to the district. ....

Duluth Public Schools unassigned general fund balance grew substantially last fiscal year due to the COVID-19 shutdown in the spring.
Unassigned general fund balance is money a district can use to fall back on if an unexpected expense arises during a school year. The district has had none to very little unassigned general fund balance since 2017. But in the 2019-20 fiscal year, the fund balance returned to what it was at the end of the 2016 fiscal year. ....
