A win for loggerheads: Court orders halt to Georgia coastal dredging plans

The U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia ordered the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to honor seasonal dredging limitations and halt hopper dredging activity set to begin this month in the Brunswick Harbor.
In a win for loggerhead turtles, other coastal wildlife, and conservationists, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia just granted SELC’s preliminary injunction ordering the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to halt hopper dredging activity set to begin this month.
After the Corps committed that dredging in the Brunswick Harbor would begin no earlier than May 28, the Court held a hearing yesterday on our challenge against the agency’s unlawful decision to eliminate seasonal limitations on hopper dredging projects that have successfully protected sea turtles and other marine life for decades without an adequate environmental review. ....

Environmental advocates say springtime harbor dredging in Georgia would harm nesting loggerhead sea turtles.
ATLANTA – Environmental advocates opposing a plan to dredge coastal Georgia shipping channels starting this month have won a court victory.
U.S. District Judge Stan Baker granted a preliminary injunction Thursday blocking the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from dredging activity in Brunswick Harbor that had been due to begin May 28.
In a lawsuit against the Corps filed on behalf of the group One Hundred Miles, the Southern Environmental Law Center argued dredging this time of year would harm endangered loggerhead sea turtles. The Corps historically has limited dredging to the winter months, when the turtles are not nesting. ....

A conservation group is taking legal action with the hope of preventing a summer dredging project in St. Simons Sound because of the potential harm it would pose to nesting sea turtles.
In a federal lawsuit filed Monday, One Hundred Miles – represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center (SELC) – is seeking a preliminary injunction to block USACE from conducting year-round operation and maintenance dredging in Brunswick Harbor starting as early as mid-May.
The lawsuit and motion for a preliminary injunction filed with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia allege that USACE did not conduct the environmental review required by the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). ....

SAVANNAH, Ga. A conservation group filed suit asking a judge to stop a federal agency from dredging a Georgia harbor during the nesting season for rare sea turtles that began over the weekend.
The group One Hundred Miles filed suit last week in U.S. District Court against the Army Corps of Engineers, which plans to end a policy that for 30 years suspended coastal dredging from the Carolinas to Florida during the warmer months when sea turtles are most abundant in coastal waters and lay their eggs on Southern beaches. ....
