Huntington Beach Votes in New Mayor Pro Tem Huntington Beach city council unanimously voted June 2 to appoint Councilmember Barbara Delgleize as mayor pro tem following the resignation of Tito Ortiz. The vote occurred during a special meeting created in order to discuss filling the role vacated by Ortiz the day prior. After a number of public comments, Councilmember Erik Peterson nominated Delgleize to the position, citing her past experience on council and as mayor, calling her a “good buffer” between current Mayor Kim Carr and two recently-elected councilmembers. Huntington Beach Resumes In-Person City Council Meetings The City of Huntington Beach, Calif., is returning to in-person city council meetings for the first time since January. The transition to in-person sessions was announced during a May 17 virtual council meeting by city manager Oliver Chi. The switch was attributed to improving COVID-19 metrics throughout Orange County. Councilmembers and members of the public will be allowed inside city hall under the condition they wear a mask, be vaccinated, or show proof of a negative COVID-19 test, Chi said. Huntington Beach Mayor Kim Carr welcomed the news during the May 17 council meeting. “I’m looking forward to getting the opportunity to see everyone face-to-face instead of in these little squares,” Carr said. ....
Huntington Beach Unveils New Mat for Disabled Beachgoers The City of Huntington Beach rolled out a new tool May 5 that gives disabled beachgoers an opportunity to get closer to the ocean. Known as a “Mobi-Mat”, the 150-foot pathway lies on top of sand, extending from the sidewalk to the shore. There is an extended area toward the end of the mat, which allows about five people in wheelchairs to be in or near the water. It is located near the city’s pier off 6th Street. Huntington Beach Councilmember Natalie Moser spearheaded the project, when six months ago she began talking to the family of a 14-year-old boy Kumaka Jenson, who was born with a spinal cord condition called spina bifida. The project has been actively in the works for about four months, according to Huntington Beach assistant to the city manager Catherine Jun. ....
