Wildfire officials keeping an eye on Canadian fires

But wildfires can.
Wildfire officials are bracing for potentially three Canadian wildfires to cross the border into Minnesota s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW).
“Today is a very critical day for us because the weather is so unstable,” Catherine Koele, a U.S. Forest Service information officer said Monday. “It s a pivotal day for us because it s all weather driven.”
Canadian fires north of Ely in the Crooked Lake area are of the most concern currently, Koele said.
“They re about 20 miles north of Ely,” Koele said. “The fires are in Quetico Provincial Park. We re in assessment for any fires that reach the border. We are in communication with Ontario. We do have a great relationship right now, but the biggest challenge is that we are in a national preparedness level five and the resources are thin.” ....

DNR Cautions Campers Against Using Fireworks This 4th of July

Jul 2, 2021 | 4:46 PM
GREEN BAY, WI (WTAQ) – If you’re going camping this weekend, you might want to keep driving past the roadside fireworks stand. That’s especially important if you’re staying on state property, where fireworks are banned.
“Leave your fireworks at home,” said DNR Wildfire Prevention Specialist, Catherine Koele. “There are times of the year where fireworks would be a little bit safer. I would say when the ground is completely covered, at least from a wildfire prevention standpoint.”
But right now, some areas of the state are covered in dry brush and grass. Those surroundings don’t mix well with even the smallest of sparks. ....

Wildfires in Wisconsin have burned nearly 1,800 acres of land so far in 2021, more than all of 2020, with more than a month to go in the typical wildfire season.
This year has been a roller coaster, said Catherine Koele, wildfire prevention specialist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, pointing to lighter than usual snowpack in the northern part of the state that led to an earlier start to the wildfire season. ....

Why Wisconsin Is Seeing 3 Times More Wildfires This Spring

Dry conditions after the snow melts in spring can take a single spark and turn it into a dangerous wildfire.
As days begin to last longer and the snow melts away, spring can be felt all across Wisconsin. But spring isn’t just the season of new life in the state, it is also wildfire season. This year, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says the conditions for wildfires are unusually high and have already led to three times the expected number of reported fires.
Catherine Koele works in forest fire protection for the state DNR. She says while fires are more common in rural areas, a recent fire just outside of Milwaukee proved fires can start anywhere there isn’t concrete. ....
