An accident on Townsend Road in Augusta damaged a utility pole and knocked out power Tuesday night to over 1,700 Central Maine Power customers and damaged a house.

A single-car motor vehicle crash Tuesday night damaged the front entrance of a house on Townsend Road in Augusta and knocked out power to over 1,700 households.
“There were no injuries involved in the crash,” Augusta police Sgt. Jesse Brann said in an email. “Besides the damage to the car, the other damage involved some siding to the house the front deck and the lawn and of course the telephone pole.” ....

Maine considers consumer-owned electric utility

Maine lawmakers have again proposed creating a new nonprofit, consumer-owned electric utility to replace two investor-owned utilities in the state, a move the electric companies say would cost billions of dollars to implement and delay the state reaching its clean energy goals.
Central Maine Power Co. (CMP) and Versant Power are the two investor-owned utilities that currently serve the state.
A bipartisan group of lawmakers, including state Rep. Seth Berry (D-Bowdoinham), House chair of the Energy, Utilities and Technology Committee and sponsor of the bill, say a consumer-owned utility would improve service and lower rates. Berry introduced a similar bill in 2020 that died in the legislature. ....

Using Patriots Day as a platform to declare energy independence, the new Our Power coalition called for a takeover of Maine s two largest utilities on Monday, Central Maine Power, owned by a Spanish company, and Versant, owned by a Canadian one.The legislation calls for replacing them with a privately financed, consumer-owned utility to be called Pine Tree Power Company.The companies were quick to deride the idea, with CMP, calling it “switching to government-run power with no guarantee of improved reliability or service.”CMP serves 660,000 Maine commercial and residential customers, and Versant Power, 140,000. Maine continues to top most other states in the number and duration of power outages caused primarily by severe weather and downed trees, but regulators and utilities are aiming to improve upon that dubious distinction.
The state ranked first nationally in its average of four outages per year and second in outage duration of 14 hours annually from 2015 to 2019, a recently released analysis of federal data by electric automation company MRO Electric found. Outages are counted if they last more than five minutes. Even when discounting severe weather, Maine still ranked first in outages and second in duration, indicating the weather is not merely to blame and the state can improve network reliability. ....
