LANL: Antarctica Remains The Wild Card For Sea-Level Rise Estimates Through 2100

LANL: Antarctica Remains The Wild Card For Sea-Level Rise Estimates Through 2100
LANL News:
A massive collaborative research project covered in the journal
Nature this week offers projections to the year 2100 of future sea-level rise from all sources of land ice, offering the most complete projections created to date.
“This work synthesizes improvements over the last decade in climate models, ice sheet and glacier models, and estimates of future greenhouse gas emissions,” Stephen Price said, one of the Los Alamos scientists on the project. “More than 85 researchers from various disciplines, including our team at Los Alamos National Laboratory, produced sea-level rise projections based on the most recent computer models developed within the scientific community and updated scenarios of future greenhouse gas emissions,” Price said. ....

Large Swath of Antarctic Ice Shelf at Risk of Collapse

(CN) The worst-case scenario is always on the horizon. It holds our attention, but even the deer caught in the headlights has a chance to act. That’s why researchers at the University of Reading in the U.K. stress the risk of a catastrophic Antarctic ice shelf collapse and sea level rise due to climate change in a study published Thursday in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.
The study evaluated the effects of global temperature increases of 1.5, 2 and 4 degrees from pre-industrial levels which will lead to greater melt and runoff and increase the risk of destabilization. ....

Glaciers in Antarctica are turning the concept of “glacial pace” on its head. A new study of a little-observed area on the continent finds that rising heat is making ice streams flow faster, which has worrisome consequences for sea level rise. ....

University of Leeds | News > Environment > Glaciers accelerate in the Getz region of West Antarctica

Glaciers in West Antarctica are moving more quickly from land into the ocean, contributing to rising global sea levels.
A 25-year record of satellite observations has been used to show widespread increases in ice speed across the Getz sector for the first time, with some ice accelerating into the ocean by nearly 50%.
The new study, led by the University of Leeds, reports that 14 glaciers in the Getz region are thinning and flowing more quickly into the ocean. Between 1994 and 2018, 315 gigatonnes of ice has been lost, adding 0.9 mm to global mean sea level – equivalent to 126 million Olympic swimming pools of water.   ....
