COVID-19 patients down, but other patients up in area hospitals

As January’s surge in COVID-19-related hospitalizations started to taper, area hospitals got hit with a new surge of very ill patients who didn’t have COVID-19.
“We are definitely seeing a decrease in the number of COVID patients,” said Dr. Kent Hall, chief physician executive for the Mohawk Valley Health System. “However, our overall census is staying pretty flat. It’s going down a little bit, but not as far as the numbers would indicate from the lower COVID numbers.”
Bassett Healthcare Network has seen a similar phenomenon, agreed Dr. Kai Mebust, the network’s chief hospitalist. And many of those unexpected patients seem to be sicker than expected, he added, emphasizing that conclusion is based on anecdotal reports, not a formal analysis of data. ....

MVHS nurses speak out about pandemic conditions in system hospitals

She cries at least once every shift from sheer emotional exhaustion, said a nurse at the St. Luke’s Campus of the Mohawk Valley Health System.
“You just look at your patients and they’re not getting better,” said the nurse who has been caring for patients with COVID-19 at the New Hartford hospital.
One day five patients died, she said. “That’s disturbing on every level,” said the nurse, whose name is being withheld because she fears retaliation for talking to the media without permission.
This nurse and seven others five from the health system’s St. Elizabeth Campus in Utica and three from the St. Luke’s Campus told remarkably similar stories of trying to care for too many patients with too little help as the number of COVID-19 patients surged in January. ....

Oneida County Surpasses 100 COVID Deaths in January

Oneida County Surpasses 100 COVID Deaths in January
The prediction made at Halloween and before the holidays was simple: if we let our guard down, people will die from COVID-19. The prediction by health officials was correct and the numbers prove it.
At the end of the July, it seemed that Oneida County had defeated the virus. During August, September and October, COVID deaths were under control. Most days there were no deaths, and when there was, it was almost exclusively only one. That all changed at the end of October.
There were four deaths in September, and four in October. After Halloween, cases started to increase dramatically. We no longer enjoyed  single digit increases in cases as the COVID rate skyrocketed. We watched new cases surpass 100, then 200, and even 300 by late December. Hospitalizations rose accordingly and so did fatalities. ....
