DURING March and April, at the brush end of the fox hunting season, the pursuit of hares was, in the 19th century, a major field ‘sport’.
Around Milnthorpe, harriers were sponsored by the inns. In 1854, the Bull’s Head hunt was excitedly reported by The Westmorland Gazette.
Poor Puss was quickly located and it seemed she would be quickly ‘dispatched’ by her panting pursuers until she cannily sought refuge in a cottage.
When the Master Mr Reamington and three or four other gentlemen on horseback came up with dogs and hosts of pedestrians to the cottage door and demanded entrance, the old dame would not suffer them in until they paid her a shilling for prisoner. ....
