Concern that the future of Maidstone s Hazlitt Theatre lies in the balance after Covid-enforced closure has stopped all income has prompted many people to reflect on the good times they have had there.
For many decades the County Towners Variety Club was almost synonymous with the theatre in Earl Street, having been associated with the venue when it was still known as the Maidstone Municipal Theatre.

Formed in 1961 and eventually folding in 1998, the County Towners put on two shows a year, in May and November, that easily rivalled the popularity of the Christmas panto. ....

Over nearly 17 years, foster parents Naomi Dobbs and husband Andrew Keeping have cared for more than 20 children with learning disabilities and complex needs.
The pair now have two boys at Five Acre Wood (FAW) School in Maidstone, which supports youngsters who have profound, severe and complex learning difficulties.

Having spent the past year championing the school’s Friends group, which raises funds on FAW’s behalf, the Kent Messenger will continue its support throughout 2021, due to the challenges faced by the charity amid the coronavirus pandemic. ....

More than 25,000 items of food were donated by the community to a Maidstone homeless charity, in response to its annual Christmas drive.
For the nineteenth year, the Kent Messenger backed Homeless Care s You Can Help campaign, which aims to secure vital donations of food, clothing and other useful items and runs throughout December.

Last month, school children, soldiers at Invicta Barracks, parishioners and good samaritans answered the call, giving generously and beating last year s total by over 10,000 items. ....
