1/2 2/2 Willmott Dixon has been awarded a £22.9m contract to deliver a ‘futuristic’ multi-storey car park in Gateshead. Gateshead Council has appointed the firm to the project, which is part of its regeneration of the area near the town’s quays, known as the Baltic Quarter. The scheme is close to the £260m arena project given planning permission in November last year, 12 months after Sir Robert McAlpine was appointed to the job. The Baltic Quarter itself is also the site of a new £13m office block called Riga, that was completed by Willmott Dixon in 2020. The new car park consists of a 10-storey steel-framed facility and will include 1,000 parking spaces, including 50 electric vehicle charge points, with the possible expansion of this for a further 300. It will contain a “large array” of solar panels above the top level of parking, a statement from the contractor said. ....

The new venue will bring together its Novotel and ibis brands when it opens in the £260m Newcastle’s Gateshead Quays regeneration scheme, the mixed-use scheme on Gateshead’s waterfront, The 187-room Novotel will feature the brand’s latest public space and bedroom design concept, due to be launched later this year, in addition to a restaurant with views over Newcastle and the River Tyne, meeting rooms and conference facilities and a gym.
