Professor: Steady public health funding could help in future health crisis


Public health departments are seeing an influx of cash and attention due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but long term, those dollars may not stick around.
The COVID-19 pandemic brought increased awareness to public health departments — how they serve communities, what services they can offer and their role in emergency response. Health departments have been tasked with leading the charge in pandemic response. With that push came additional dollars in the form of COVID-19 relief grants.
In Catawba County, the increased funding paid for COVID-19 testing, tracing, vaccination and outreach efforts.
Though some local leaders say it’s too soon to tell if funding of county health departments will increase or change due to the pandemic, Lenoir-Rhyne University Associate Professor of Public Health Randall Bergman isn’t confident. ....

16 new cases of COVID-19 were reported Wednesday (May 12) by Catawba County Public Health, increasing the total to 18,940, with 304 deaths. There were 16 people hospitalized. 32% of Catawba County’s residents are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19.
The 161st COVID-19-associated death was reported Wednesday by Burke County health officials. The individual was in their 80s and was hospitalized. 11 new cases of the virus were reported, increasing the total to 10,174. Seven people were hospitalized.
21 new cases of the coronavirus were reported Wednesday in Caldwell County, increasing the total to 9,406, with 148 deaths. There were six people hospitalized. Four new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Alexander County, raising the tally to 4,391 overall. ....

34 new cases of COVID-19 were reported Wednesday (May 5) by Catawba County Public Health, raising the overall total to 18,816, with 302 deaths. 18 people were hospitalized with the coronavirus. 30% of Catawba County’s residents have now been fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Eight new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Caldwell County Wednesday, increasing the tally to 9,324, with 147 deaths. Five people were hospitalized.
Two new cases of the virus were reported in Alexander County, lifting the total to 4,365. There have been 10,102 cases overall in Burke County, with 158 deaths, and six people were hospitalized as of earlier today (May 6). ....
