Experts fighting to keep Covid-19 out of New Zealand say they re suffering daily abuse and concerted online attacks from groups peddling disinformation.
University of Auckland research fellow Kate Hannah leads The Disinformation Project - a
Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment initiative looking at Covid-19 disinformation.
She said over the past year, there had been a rise in targeted hate towards experts and journalists who comment on and cover the virus. Most abuse subjects are women, which translates into highly gendered hate from not just individuals but from organisations. ....

Major printing company linked to Covid disinformation magazine

The company which describes itself as the largest printing and distribution outfit in the country has been linked to the distribution of a Covid disinformation magazine.
The Classification Office, the government arm responsible for classifying publications which may need to be restricted or banned, confirmed Ovato had been in contact at the end of March to seek its views on
The Real News magazine, before selling it to retailers.
Ovato’s website describes the company as “the largest print and print/distribution company in New Zealand”. ....

The fact they signed in their professional capacity has led to concerns it could expose patients to misinformation, raise the risk of vaccine hesitancy and subsequently undermine the rollout. 
In her role as a research fellow at the University of Auckland, Kate Hannah is looking into disinformation. She says the letter that is seemingly signed by a number of medical professionals is concerning .
Rather than speaking as an individual who might have some concerns with, perhaps, the way in which the vaccine rollout is going, they are doing it in a position as a doctor and thus kind of implying there are broad concerns, which really isn t the case. ....

The Pharmacy Council has issued a warning after an Auckland chemist unwittingly helped distribute an magazine.
The owner of Lambs Pharmacy & Natural Therapies Centre on Karangahape Rd, who asked not to be named, told
Stuff copies of the first edition of a Covid misinformation magazine were dropped off about five weeks ago.
They remained on display at the front of the shop for about four days before a customer commented on them, after which the owner said they were binned. ....

A group who previously advertised in a conspiracy ridden Covid-19 magazine is back again, this time organising a massive leaflet drop.
