Nine owned-Pedestrian Group, one of Australia’s largest youth-focused publishers, has announced the appointment of the team that will drive Refinery29 – a leading global media outlet focused on women and underrepresented voices – as it launches in Australia and New Zealand for the first time.
The team of 5 will be led by head of editorial Zahra Campbell-Avenell, most recently the head of publishing and editorial at Finder, and editorial leader with more than 12 years’ experience in content strategy, audience acquisition, and driving successful editorial teams.

Australian universities are failing students and leaving them unprepared for the future job market by cutting courses in Asian languages, according to teachers and experts.
Four university-level Asian language subjects have been cut in 2021 as universities cope with the ongoing economic impact of the Covid pandemic.
This week La Trobe University in Victoria confirmed it would stop accepting new enrolments in Indonesian at the end of 2021 – with only existing students able to complete the rest of their studies. ....

At the beginning of the year, Swinburne University in Victoria cut its courses in Chinese and Japanese, while Western Sydney University also cut its course in Indonesian.
Murdoch University in Western Australia had announced plans to stop offering Indonesian, which has been taught since the 1970s, but later postponed this decision.
The president of the Asian Studies Association of Australia, Kate McGregor, said these cuts were creating a “crisis” that would disadvantage Australian students and businesses in the future.
Prof Tim Lindsey, an expert in Indonesian law from the University of Melbourne, said there were now fewer people studying Indonesian in Australia than 50 years ago. ....

New Downtown New Bedford tourist shop sells unique clothing, candles


What s inside the shop
The store opened on Black Friday, this past Thanksgiving, and features products from candles, clothing, glassware to chocolates. The shop prides itself on New Bedford being the “city that lit the world” and is located only a block and a half away from the historic Rodman Candleworks Building.
In response, the store offers candles made in Massachusetts all hand-dipped, poured and dripless. “When I went to the Cape as a kid, and we got saltwater taffy on Cape Cod, I just feel the same connection between the New Bedford Candle Company and coming to New Bedford,” Lanagan said. ....
