Des Moines Community Playhouse's 2021-22 season includes classics


As the Des Moines Community Playhouse nears the end of its current season, it has announced plans for 2021-2022, including Cabaret, Roald Dahl s Matilda The Musical, and Agatha Christie s Murder on the Orient Express.   
In addition, the Kate Goldman Children s Theatre at the playhouse will perform works based on classic and contemporary children s literature, including  Junie B. Jones in Jingle Bells Batman Smells, Don t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! The Musical! and Charlotte s Web.   
Though performances will take place before in-person audiences, the playhouse said in a news release that it will continue to offer live-streaming and video-on-demand options for most of its productions.  ....

The Des Moines Playhouse has announced a new season, with Des Moines Performing Arts not far behind.

Recently, the Des Moines Playhouse announced their 2021-22 season for the mainstage and Kate Goldman Children’s Theatre. It is a full, in-person season meant to be a sense of getting back to normal. 
We really wanted to have a sense that things are normal as normal can be. We were still going to be an oasis and an opportunity to escape some of the struggles and strains of COVID by coming to the theatre and that s what we ve been doing all year long, Executive Director David Kilpatrick said. And so we were looking for a sense of normalcy going forward. ....

Creativity and adaptability drive pandemic performances

This month marks the one-year anniversary of when stages across central Iowa went dark. As local producers mourn the loss, they remain resolved to adapt and find ways to overcome the situation. A key ingredient has been the support from patrons and the government. Each of these sources is a testament to the vital contributions that performing arts add to a healthy and thriving community. Another has been the collective coping with the situation. Each company not only has gone through rigorous internal evaluations and “rolling plans” in response to the fluid challenge, but they are also maintaining ties with their kindred spirits: fellow companies in the community. New varieties of performance arts arise from the pandemic

One truth always seems to emerge from cultural chaos: creativity will find a way to adapt, overcome and continue to engage the public. Central Iowa is showing its mettle during these challenging times, and some wonderful offerings are arising, phoenix-like, from the pandemic fires.
The end of COVID-19 is not known, but the promise of vaccines helps. The economy is fighting back, including the creative economy. Many theatre companies remain publicly dormant, yet behind the scenes, each continues to pencil in plans for their future. When the time is right, they will emerge to again share their special brands of performances. Until then, each encourages their patrons and the public to stay in touch to be updated about progress toward that day when the curtains rise again. ....
