Buttigieg Touts Biden Infrastructure Plan During Memphis Bridge Visit

Representatives from local industries affected by the protracted shutdown of the Hernando de Soto Bridge had the ear of the White House this week.
U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg visited with leaders of hometown shipping giant, FedEx, as well as both the Tennessee and Arkansas Trucking Associations in Memphis Thursday to reiterate the importance of reliable and safe infrastructure for local, regional and national commerce. They also relayed the mounting economic damage the continued closure is causing.
The six-lane Interstate 40 bridge connecting Tennessee and Arkansas was shut down three weeks ago after a routine inspection found a serious fracture in a support beam. ....

Memphis has a transportation problem. An interstate bridge that connects the city to Arkansas has been shut down because of a large crack in a steel beam. Officials have also stopped maritime traffic on part of the Mississippi River. Here s Katie Riordan of member station WKNO.
KATIE RIORDAN, BYLINE: No one is sure when the beam cracked, but it was found during a routine inspection of the nearly 50-year-old bridge this week. Tens of thousands of cars and trucks cross the Interstate 40 Hernando de Soto Bridge every day. Now engineers are sorting out how to fix the fracture. It could take several weeks or even months to repair. Clay Bright heads the Tennessee Department of Transportation. He says they have a lot more questions than answers. ....

The Biden administration is promoting its multi-trillion dollar American Jobs Plan and American Families Plan in cities across the country. And on Thursday, that effort included a stop in the Mid-South for Vice President Kamala Harris’ husband, Doug Emhoff, and Labor Secretary Marty Walsh.
They visited a federally-funded vocational school to talk up the spending packages, while holding a roundtable discussion with one student and several administrators at the Dr. Benjamin L. Hooks Job Corps Center in South Memphis.
The corps residential campus provides training for careers in fields like construction, healthcare and computer technology.
Participants told the Washington delegation, which included Congressman Steve Cohen, that schools like the center need to reach a wider audience and be able to more quickly adapt their programs to changing industries. ....
