National Women Physicians Day

February 3rd is National Women Physicians Day.
This annual observance celebrates how women have influenced and enhanced the practice of medicine and the 200th birthday of Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman to obtain a medical degree in the United States.
For the Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, New York, this day is significant as we recognize the efforts of Leadership Team member Sr. Mary Flood, OP, a physician and infectious-disease specialist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital.
Throughout the past year, Sr. Mary has used her expertise to protect the sisters within the congregation, especially those living at the Motherhouse, from the deadly pandemic threat. ....

Ministry During COVID : Sr. Maggie McDermott, OP

Before the pandemic, Sr. Maggie McDermott, OP, used to attend Mass every morning at St. Barnabus Church in the Bronx before she started her ministry as Executive Director of the Tolentine Zeiser Community Life Center.
Those daily masses were an ideal way to start her day, as once she arrived at her ministry, she was quite busy overseeing the pre-kindergarten program for three and four-year-olds.
When the pandemic hit, the kids went home, but the Tolentine Zeiser administration and teachers still showed up to work each day to teach children remotely from the school.
“I’ve been here for 43 years, and I’ve seen nothing like this. It’s been a difficult struggle,” shared Sr. Maggie, a Sister of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, New York. ....

As we enter the Christmas season, it is essential to keep in mind those who are less fortunate and struggling due to the pandemic s devastating economic fallout.
One of the most heartbreaking aspects of COVID-19 has been the rising number of people now at risk for hunger.
In Orange County, New York, over 450,000 people are at risk of going hungry each month. Those at risk include children, seniors living on fixed incomes, people with disabilities, the homeless, and the unemployed.
These troubling statistics led Sisters Ellenrita Purcaro, Didi Madden, and other Sisters of Saint Dominic of Blauvelt, and friends of Harmony Farm, a ministry site of the Sisters, to step up and support the Goshen Food Pantry, also known as the Goshen Ecumenical Pantry. ....
