LIVINGSTON, NJ Participation in an intensive, online international math competition has added up to a first-place win for a group of New Jersey high school students.
The team of five 11th and 12th graders from Livingston High School in Livingston took home the top prize of $22,500 in college scholarships, out of the total $125,000+ being awarded, after being chosen as winners yesterday. Thousands of high school juniors and seniors across the U.S. and sixth form students in the U.K. vied for distinction in this year s MathWorks Math Modeling (M3) Challenge, a prestigious competition that demonstrates the importance of math in everyday life. ....

Solving The STEM Jobs Crisis

In the US, jobs in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) have a supply and demand problem. Due to an array of trends, including the creation of new types of jobs that require STEM skills and lower graduation rates for STEM degrees, there are currently too many jobs and not enough qualified candidates to fill them.
This issue was the crux of the last two reports on the state of STEM education from the President s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST), published in 2018 and 2012. As both reports acknowledge, the solution isn t as simple as just getting more college students to stick with majors in STEM though that does certainly help. ....

Despite pandemic, Potsdam STEM program for high school students still available

POTSDAM Despite the pandemic challenges, Clarkson University’s IMPETUS for Career Success program (Integrated Math and Physics for Entry to Undergraduate STEM) continues to thrive and provides students with academic enrichment and research experience in science, mathematics, and technology content areas and consists of summer and academic year components, said a press release from the organization.
The program is for eligible 7th through 12th-grade students and is funded through a New York State Department of Education Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP).
IMPETUS activities range from a computer programming game challenge, conducting original research projects for a statewide competition, interacting with college mentors and licensed STEM professionals, to designing and analyzing a model roller coaster. ....

Advocacy group reports COVID outbreak at Yuba County Jail [Appeal-Democrat, Marysville, Calif.]
Jan. 2 At least 70 detainees at Yuba County Jail and at least 13 staff members have tested positive for COVID-19 over the past few weeks, according to advocacy group “Freedom for Yuba Detainees.”
Those numbers are not confirmed by jail or sheriff’s office personnel.
In a press release issued Dec. 23, the group said detained individuals have reported to them that there is an inability to socially distance, inmates are being forced to use the same cloth mask for months, and are being denied access to cleaning and hygiene supplies. ....
