Before this season, the world’s second-highest mountain, first climbed in 1954, had been tried only six times in the coldest months. Each effort ended in failure. Even so, last month two expeditions of Nepali climbers converged on the Godwin Austen Glacier in a remote corner of Pakistan to attempt the feat. Neither of the groups was there to guide wealthy Western clients to the top and then take back seats to their accomplishments, as Nepalis in general and ethnic Sherpa in particular often do as the hired help. They were climbing for themselves. Both teams made it together to the 28,251-foot summit last Saturday, making a statement of teamwork and selflessness for Indigenous Himalayan climbers. ....

This year’s theme is “Art Surrounds Us.” “Creating art is a great way for students to express themselves,” Crowe said. “The Metro East has many talented artists, and I hope students of all ages choose to participate in this statewide art contest.” The contest includes four entry levels: grades K-2, 3-5, 6-8 and 9-12. Body of missing Russian-American climber found near K2 Photographs of the climber s body were sent to his family for positive verification The body of American-Russian climber, Alex Goldfarb, has been found in the Gilgit-Baltistan region after a day s search as rescue attempts were hampered by poor weather. Goldfarb was attempting to climb Broad Peak, located around 8km away from K2. Authorities have also confirmed that the body of the climber has been recovered. According to a local tourist company, Goldfarb had reached the summit of Pastore peak, at an altitude of more than 6,000 metres with his fellow climber Zoltan Slanko. ....
