K Amarnath, a former National Secretary of Indian Journalists Union (IJU) and President of Andhra Pradesh Union of Working Journalists (APUWJ), has passed away due to Covid-19 infection.
The 69-year-old journalist breathed his last while taking treatment at the Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here.
He was elected as a member to the Press Council of India and headed its sub-committee that conducted an inquiry into attacks on journalists in various parts of the country. After a nation-wide tour, the committee submitted a report with recommendations to protect the lives and interests of journalists. ....

Senior journalist and former member of the Press Council of India (PCI), Kosuri Amarnath passed away on Tuesday due to COVID-19 complications at the Nizams Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) here. He was 69 and is survived by his wife and son.
Affectionately called ‘Babai’ by his colleagues and juniors, he made invaluable services with regard to freedom of the press, rights and welfare of journalists during his 40-year stint in the profession. He was member of PCI for two terms representing Indian Journalists Union (IJU). Heading a PCI committee on attacks against journalists, he extensively toured across the country and submitted a detailed report in which he made out a case for the necessity of a separate statute for the safety of working journalists. ....

For hours until help arrived, they stayed that way – hanging on to iron bars protruding from the roof of the dark tunnel, hauling themselves up to stay above the icy cold water that had gushed in on Sunday morning.

The 12 people who were rescued from the under-construction output tunnel at the Tapovan-Vishnugad NTPC Hydel Power Project say they had no hope that they would survive, but a mobile phone proved a godsend.
“There is usually no mobile network in the tunnel but on Sunday, we got it for two minutes, enough to make a call to one of our officers,” said Basant Bahadur, 26, one of the 12 rescued from the tunnel Sunday afternoon who are now recovering at the ITBP Hospital in Joshimath. ....

Several Andhra Pradesh State government employees associations representatives are expressing concern over the Election Notification issued by the State Election Commissioner Nimmagadda Ramesh Kumar and have threatened to boycott the Panchayat elections duties and if needed would also call for a state-wide strike.
Speaking to the media on Saturday, several leaders of various government and teacher unions, including the AP NGO Association and the AP Government Employees Union have said that, conducting Panchayat elections was not possible at this juncture when the threat of Coronavirus was still looming large and found fault with the SEC over the release of the notification. ....
