Iowa may be flyover country, but the late Prince Philip, who died at age 99 on Friday, once made a stop in the Hawkeye State.
The Duke of Edinburgh, husband of Queen Elizabeth II for more than 70 years, paused in Mason City on Nov. 4, 1969.
Philip was enroute from Wyoming, where he had visited the ranch of family friends, to Washington, D.C., to dine with then-President Richard Nixon. A licensed pilot, he was at the controls when the twin-turboprop plane landed at Mason City Municipal Airport.

It was just a 37-minute refueling stop, but the prince was gracious, stepping out of the plane to greet a crowd of 300 that had gathered to see him, according to a Des Moines Register story published the following day.
