Government receives final report into Mason Jet Lee case

The Palaszczuk Government today received the Public Service Commission’s report around the death five years ago of Caboolture toddler Mason Jet Lee.
Children, Youth Justice and Multicultural Affairs Minister Leanne Linard welcomed the independent report into the circumstances surrounding the 22-month-old’s death.
“Mason’s death was an absolute tragedy,” the Minister said.
“He suffered cruelly at the hands of those who should have loved and protected him the most and they have been punished for their crimes.
“Five years ago, the department did not meet Mason’s needs and for that we are deeply sorry. ....

MORE abused and neglected children will be adopted out to new families by the Child Safety Department despite overwhelming objections from child advocates.
A parliamentary committee probing the contentious new laws drawn up by the Palaszczuk Government have recommended they pass, despite noting a significant majority of people who came forward to the inquiry opposed them.
The change - which was a recommendation out of tragic toddler Mason Jett Lee s coronial inquest - comes amid intense community debate over the state s youth crime crisis and the influence of the child protection system. ....

The Child Safety figures in the Report on Government Services is an annual confirmation of the disturbing status quo.
The numbers of children reported to the system continue to grow.
There were 23,266 notifications in 2019-20, with 6537 substantiated and 11,570 young people on new or continuing protection orders.
Investigations continue to be slow, investigators continue to miss signs of harm until later and children continue to be harmed, even once they re in state care.
Workers talk about turning up to check on families only to be screamed at, with doors slammed in their faces. ....

New child safety laws stemming from the Mason Jett Lee tragedy that encourage the adoption of neglected or abused children could leave them in new traumatic situations, MPs have been told.
Their concerns come as new figures show 197 children were sexually, physically, emotionally abused or neglected while in care last year.
A parliamentary inquiry is considering legislation that makes it clear adoption should be seriously considered in cases where a child cannot be returned to their family and can t be granted a long-term guardianship to another suitable person, like their grandparents.
