Rice researchers highlight variety development, growing methods at 112th annual field day Derek Albert LSU AgCenter More than 400 rice producers and industry insiders gathered for the first post-pandemic field day at the LSU AgCenter H. Rouse Caffey Rice Research Station on June 30. Following a virtual field day in 2020, this year’s in-person event featured a field tour highlighting new developments in rice varieties, pest management and growing practices. “We have had a great turnout for our first post-pandemic LSU AgCenter rice field day,” said Dustin Harrell, resident coordinator of the Rice Research Station. “We can once again give our rice growers and rice industry professionals an in-person look at our collaborative research efforts to create new varieties and best management practices for a thriving and sustainable rice crop here in Louisiana.”

It’s utterly common in some forms of popular music the realm of the garage band that finally makes a recording but somewhat less common in jazz, where established leaders tend to take younger musicians into their bands. A group of unknown 20-somethings have to develop a sense of self-identity and cooperation that can help them to do something fresh and what’s more wonderful in jazz than those qualities? Nortonk are just such a quartet, named for their professor Kevin Norton (from the front half of his email address, apparently) at the William Paterson College jazz program. Norton is a drummer with a history of bold and diverse performance on the “downtown” New York scene (with Anthony Braxton, Phillip Johnston of the Microscopic Septet, Fred Frith, John Zorn, Steve Lehman, and many others) and his students are equally open-ended in their playing. International City Theatre will begin showing its newest production, Slow Food by playwright Wendy MacLeod, virtually Thursday-Sunday April 29th through May 16. The play follows a husband and wife celebrating their 23rd wedding anniversary until things go awry during their anniversary dinner. The comedy is led by actor and producer Stu James and Lifetime star Meredith Thomas. James’s acting work has earned him multiple awards, including a Broadway World Award, Los Angeles for “Best Lead Actor” in a musical for his portrayal of John Dolphin in the musical, Recorded in Hollywood. Thomas has acted in multiple Lifetime television movies including “The Wrong Crush” and “The Wrong Boy Next Door” alongside Vivica A. Fox.
