Contracts awarded for installation of MCPS water bottle filling stations
The Montgomery County Board of Education on Thursday awarded contracts to three companies tasked with installing water bottle filling stations at nearly 100 schools.
A total cost was not provided in school board documents, but MCPS officials had previously estimated it would be about $1.5 million. Contracts were awarded to:
• Denver-Elek of Baltimore
• Shapiro & Duncan of Rockville
MCPS plans to use funds from its capital or operating budgets to fund the project, then be “reimbursed” with federal grants. About 730 Montgomery County Public Schools students less than one half of 1 percent of the overall student population will return to schools March 1 after nearly a year of virtual remote classes.
In a unanimous vote on Tuesday, the Board of Education approved a plan to bring back some students in special education and career and technical education programs in about three weeks. ....

MCPS special education families fear learning loss since schools closed


Now, 11 months later, the situation is nearly unbearable.
“His education has gotten so far behind now, it’s like game over,” Chan said of her son. “He was already behind, but now he’s so far behind, he’s never going to be anywhere close to being with the rest of the group again. It’s just too late.”
Chan’s story is one of hundreds in Montgomery County from families distraught over the prolonged school closures and what they believe will be a lifelong impact on their students with special needs.
A handful of Facebook groups have sprouted up focused on advocating for swift school reopenings, often citing the closures’ effects on students in special education programs. ....

MCPS' highest-paid employees are administrators, central office staff


Central office staffers collect largest paychecks, data shows

The top 20 highest paid Montgomery County Public Schools employees all central office staff earn an average of $212,095 each year, according to school district records obtained by Bethesda Beat.
The highest paid employee, Superintendent Jack Smith, earns $290,000 per year. In 2020, he declined a raise as part of his new, four-year contract due to the financial constraints caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Smith last week announced he will retire this spring.
Collectively, the 20 highest paid employees earn about $4.2 million annually, less than 1% of the district’s overall budget. Eleven earn a salary of $186,500. ....
