Reconstruction and Its Aftermath
The Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 freed African Americans in rebel states, and after the Civil War, the Thirteenth Amendment emancipated all U.S. slaves wherever they were. As a result, the mass of Southern blacks now faced the difficulty Northern blacks had confronted that of a free people surrounded by many hostile whites. Scarce “Triple Sig” Series 1882 $50 Gold Certificate Found in Old Book

Delighted to hear we valued the piece at five figures, she was happy to pay the modestly increased grading fee.
We graded this example as a Very Fine 30 due to limited folds and wear. We were happy to see this example retained a bright orange back along the entire design, as these Gold Certificates often have the ink oxidize to brown on the backs over time in places. ....

Spotlight on Commerce: Shayla E. Moon, Legislative and Intergovernmental Affairs Specialist, Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA)

Following the legacy of activism and entrepreneurship, my siblings and I were encouraged to find career paths that would allow us to give voice to causes and individuals when they needed it most. Being a fifth generation HBCU graduate from institutions such as Atlanta University, Dillard University, Tuskegee University, Howard University, and Bennett College, it also was impressed upon us that our chosen profession would assist people of color.
Before beginning my federal civil service career, I served in the United States Air Force and as a government relations professional for various political campaigns, trade associations, and nonprofit organizations. My advocacy and public policy foundation began by working for civil rights organizations such as the National Urban League and the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) under Dr. Dorothy I. Height s tutelage. Other efforts have included: K-12 education policy for City Year Inc., a member of the AmeriCorps national service ne ....
