415 volunteers take part in Day of Caring

May 15—SCHUYLKILL HAVEN — Volunteers worked Friday morning to help the Hawk Mountain Scout Reservation prepare for its summer programs as part of the countywide Day of Caring. The annual Captain Jason B. Jones Memorial Day of Caring, run by Schuylkill United Way, brings volunteers from local companies to provide service to organizations throughout the county. The day is named after Jason B. . ....

High-energy particle accelerators within our galaxy discovered -- Science & Technology -- Sott.net

Move over, CERN. Unknown sources in the Milky Way dubbed PeVatrons accelerate protons to energies of a few peta-electronvolts - dozens of times higher than the yield of the Large Hadron Collider.
Now, new data from a high-altitude experiment in Tibet confirm that such very-high-energy cosmic rays are indeed produced in our own galaxy.

Ultra high-energy diffuse gamma rays (yellow points) are distributed along the Milky Way Galaxy. The gray shaded area indicates the area outside the detectors field of view. The results paint a much fuller picture of the PeVatron population in the Milky Way, says Pat Harding (Los Alamos National Laboratory), who was not involved in the study. ....

Highest-energy cosmic rays originate in star clusters, not supernovae | Space

March 17, 2021
New research solves a decades-long riddle: from where do the highest-energy cosmic rays originate? Even supernovae – exploding stars – can’t explain them. Now it seems these sorts of cosmic rays may come from clusters of young, hot, massive stars.
Cygnus OB2 is the nearest star-forming region to us. It’s what’s called an OB association, meaning it contains some of the most massive and luminous stars known. Scientists found cosmic rays of the highest energies to originate from this region of space. The colors – green to yellow to red – represent high-energy gamma-ray emission as seen by the HAWC observatory, overlaid on an infrared image from the Spitzer telescope (the white regions).
