By the time I woke up on Sept. 11, 2001, one tower had fallen. As I was leaving for school, the second one did. I was 13, an eighth grader in Portland, Oregon. In social studies class our teacher, Ms. James, rolled in a TV on a metal cart. A pall was cast over the school; we followed no lessons that day. We watched news coverage, and Ms. James led discussions of what was happening, what it meant for our country, how we felt about it. Teachers begin most every school day with lesson plans, but sometimes events change the course of the classroom â and the course of history. ....

Eric Hylden / Grand Forks Herald Jo Miller will not soon forget the look on Cullen Capes’ face when he was choking on a piece of candy last week in her fourth-grade class. “It was just a look of sheer panic, like, it’s bad,” she said of the incident that took place Wednesday, Jan. 7, in her classroom at Kelly Elementary School. “He was clutching his throat, and I could tell that something had lodged.” ....

(Grand Forks Herald photo) Grand Forks School Board members during a special meeting Thursday heard the rationale behind an array of recommendations by its Facilities Task Force, charting the district’s future. The task force’s recommendations include consolidating Valley Middle School and West, Wilder and Winship elementary schools and replacing them with a K-8 school on the city’s north side. The task force recommended that Valley and West schools should close because renovation is no longer considered to be a viable option. ....
