Kelly Chandler GLADSTONE Kelly Chandler of Gladstone, has been named the Northern Michigan University Political Science and Public Administration Department 2020-21 outstanding graduating graduate student. On May 1, she earned a master’s in public administration (MPA) degree. Chandler is a first-generation graduate student who holds an undergraduate degree in criminal justice and social services. After graduating from NMU in 2012, she served as an AmeriCorps NCCC member, conducting more than 2,000 hours of disaster relief and community service in the southwest region of the United States. After 10 years of working in the child welfare and criminal justice system, she transitioned into her current role as the program director of the Delta Regional Child Advocacy Center in 2020. ....
COVID-19 Cases, Hospitalizations Trend Up in Itasca County as Vaccine Rollout Continues Itasca County Public Health Division Urges All Residents to Research and Receive Their COVID-19 Vaccination April 29, 2021 GRAND RAPIDS, Minn. – Itasca County Public Health and area residents are reflecting on the gratitude of science after surpassing the one-year anniversary of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Public Health Department reports new cases of COVID-19 to continue to rise in Itasca County, especially among residents aged 30 – 50, and school-aged children. As of Thursday, April 29, in the past seven days, 152 new cases of COVID-19 have been detected in the county. One year into the pandemic, hospitalizations are also continuing to rise. ....
The Itasca County Board of Commissioners officially opposed the parole of James Shane Swanson this week and recommended his continued incarceration. The recommendation came during the county boardâs work session on Tuesday, April 20. The board felt the release of Swanson âwould create an extreme safety risk.â Swanson was convicted of four counts of first degree murder and one count of kidnapping on Dec. 14, 1994. Swanson and his co-defendant admitted to the killing of Carin Streufert in Aitkin County in the early hours of June 14, 1991. On June 14, 1991, Streufert, an 18-year-old college student, went to a Perkins Restaurant in Grand Rapids with some friends between 12:30 and 1 a.m. Around 2:45 a.m., Streufert departed. Although another friend offered her a ride home, Streufert decided to walk. ....
To date, half of Itasca County area residents age 16 and older have been vaccinated against COVID-19. The vaccines have been shown they are preventing serious illness and death among residents. They are available at no cost at most area hospitals, clinics and pharmacies.
