'With open arms': How an inn is helping evacuees from Jean Marie River

Annette Mason and the staff at Fort Providence s Snowshoe Inn in Northwest Territories started preparing for possible flood evacuees on May 7, when reports of flooding started coming from nearby Jean Marie River.
By Saturday night, it was all hands on deck for Mason, two volunteer staff and the handful of housekeepers at the inn, as evacuees started rolling in at all hours of the night.
We just had to welcome them with open arms, Mason, the hotel s manager, told CBC. ....

Shiny new prize awaits anglers at backcountry lakes in Colorado

Colorado Parks and Wildlife recently announced a unique backcountry fishing opportunity.
That was the description in a news release from Joe Brand, manager of State Forest State Park in northwestern Colorado. Two alpine lakes here are newly home to golden trout, the California state fish whose population diminished at State Forest in the 1990s.
The shiny trout swim elsewhere in Colorado, but the state wildlife agency maintains the record catch of 22 1/2 inches took place at State Forest s Kelly Lake in 1979. The species was first stocked there earlier that decade.
Despite their short tenure in Kelly Lake, the news release noted, the reputation of golden trout being a fun-to-catch and brightly colored fish lives on in the memory of area anglers. ....

Junction Creek has been the butt of many a Sudbury joke, but during a recent paddle on a warm Saturday afternoon, I was stunned by just how beautiful the waterway is at its western reaches.
Launching from Mud Lake amid a carpet of underwater weeds (resembling milfoil) the size of a football field, I set out for a little adventure on a most urban waterway. While the homes of Lively punctuated the left bank, the right was largely forested and a reminder of how close to nature we live in Greater Sudbury.
