Hettie Smith, the driver of Bus 68, was approaching a stop Monday afternoon when she noticed a car failing to slow down for the stopped school bus from Kershaw Elementary School.

Since March 2020, a period when schools were mostly closed to students and operated with smaller-than-normal staffs, officials have tracked a total of more than 1,200 confirmed COVID-19 cases 1,080 adults and 129 students associated with CPS buildings, according to the district’s online tracker. The most recent data, which is as of April 15 and denotes when cases were reported, cites a total of 34 adults and 19 children with “actionable” cases, meaning they were present in a school during a period when they could have been contagious. The previous week saw 40 adult and 18 student cases.
