Last week my wife, who is in aged care, messed herself while trying to sit on the toilet. A carer was called and I watched as the young woman bagged the clothes, with kind words calmed my wife, washed her and then dressed her in clean clothes. The bathroom had to be washed down. Throughout this unpleasant job, the woman – from a foreign country and on the lowest pay – did her work cheerfully and with great compassion. ....

Sony Music's New Social Justice Funding Round


The fund has provided money to over 300 organizations since it was established last June.
Sony Music Group is set to provide funding to over 90 additional international, national and regional non-profits via its $100 million Global Social Justice Fund, the company announced today.
The fund, which was unveiled last June, was established to support social justice and anti-racist initiatives. This is the third funding round to date, bringing the total number of organizations supported to more than 300 around the world.
The allocation breakdown in this funding round is 24% educational initiatives, 23% civic and community engagement programs, 21% civil rights and social justice organizations, 17% youth advocacy organizations and 15% additional equal rights, cultural and wellness programs. The work of the chosen organizations impacts communities in Africa, Australia, Canada, the Latin America region, New Zealand, the U.K. and the U.S. ....

Livestream brings world's finest authors to Newcastle's Digital Library

Newcastle book lovers are being given access to one of Australia’s largest literary events thanks to a collaboration between City of Newcastle and the Sydney Writers’ Festival.
The Live and Local program will see a range of festival events livestreamed from Carriageworks in Sydney direct to City of Newcastle’s Digital Library on Friday 30 April and Saturday 1 May 2021.
The free community event provides access to a diverse range of authors not usually available to regional audiences and is being delivered as part of City of Newcastle’s commitment to promoting lifelong learning opportunities and creating social and community connections. ....

Since it was first established in 1921, the Archibald Prize has drawn plenty of headlines with its controversies, occasional legal stoushes, and personal triumphs.
So it’s perhaps fitting that Sydney mixed media artist James Powditch has pinched the news headlines to create his latest entry for the prestigious portrait prize on its 100th birthday.

After painting Labor leader Anthony Albanese in 2020, Powditch has lionised another of his lifelong heroes, veteran ABC journalist Kerry O’Brien.
The six-time Walkley Award-winning O’Brien is painted twice in black silhouette to show the fine line the journalist walks between his public and private persona, and a man looking back over a long career and forward to life post-journalism. ....
