Cadillac requires advance reservation and a park pass. BAR HARBOR Starting May 26 through Oct. 19, the National Park Service is requiring advanced vehicle reservations to access Acadia National Park’s Cadillac Summit Road. The reservation system, originally tested by in the summer of 2020, is an effort to protect Cadillac Summit’s natural environment and to avoid overcrowding of the parking lot. To make a vehicle reservation to access Cadillac Mountain by car, go to www.recreation.gov and enter Cadillac Summit in the search box. The cost is $4 per vehicle, plus a $2 reservation fee. Once the vehicle reservation is booked, visitors should save the confirmation code and purchase a park pass. ....
Tremont Town Meeting draws first-time and seasoned voters TREMONT Residents chose a new member for the Board of Selectmen on Tuesday with 110 votes for Eric Eaton, three more than incumbent Kevin Buck. Current Selectman Mike Mansolilli received 51 votes and there were 30 votes for David Campbell. Eaton will join the board at their next meeting on May 10 and serve a three-year term. Voters also cast 142 ballots in favor of incumbent Keri Hayes for the Tremont Consolidated School Committee. There were 69 write-in votes for the open seat on that committee, 61 of which were cast for Eliza Bishop who won the vote. Hayes was also reelected to continue as a member of the High School Board of Trustees. ....
Whey Better Cookie Co. opens new shop in Brighton Brighton couple Greg and Keri Hayes said their confections business boomed after several television appearances. Orders for peanut butter cups, cookies and other items poured in following a spot on ABC s The View, which aired in September, and appearances on the Home Shopping Network and HSN.com. They founded Whey Better Protein Bakery a few years ago and recently changed it name to Whey Better Cookie Co. While they were thrilled to be slammed with orders as a result of the TV shows, online deliveries and orders from stores, they felt they were missing out on something the in-person customer experience. ....
New school system structure proposed BAR HARBOR As currently structured, the Mount Desert Island Regional School System is cumbersome, inefficient and an absolute bear to manage, according to a committee of school board members. Of course, school administrators and board members have known that for years. But now the committee has recommended a specific alternative – the Regional School Unit (RSU) model. Nearly everything about the way the individual schools currently operate would remain the same. In each town, the school principal would propose and the elected school committee would adopt an annual budget. But instead of the budget being voted on at the town’s annual Town Meeting, each school’s budget would be folded into a single district budget, which residents of all the member towns would have an opportunity to vote on at a district-wide meeting. ....
Island Briefs Coalition membership BAR HARBOR A letter from the Maine Service Center Coalition requesting that the town pay $500 in dues to continue its membership was presented at last week’s Town Council meeting. The coalition serves as a clearinghouse of information, a gathering point for people with common interests, a forum for speakers to present and interact and a place for collective advocacy for the town of Bar Harbor. In addition to protecting all municipal revenue streams and modest gains of the past two years, the coalition’s priorities include addressing the need for permanent solutions to county jail funding, more responsive tax increment finance rules and regulations, changes to the general assistance burden for many of Maine’s service centers, as well as addressing the related issues of homelessness. The council voted to renew membership and appoint Town Manager Cornell Knight as the town’s representative. ....
