(WTXL) â The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is investigating after a man was found dead near a roadway in Cairo, Ga. On Sunday, May 9, 2021, at approximately 1:55 a.m., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Cairo Police Department to assist in a death investigation that occurred in the 800 Block of 8th Street NW, in Cairo. According to the report, Cairo Police were called to a report of gunshots in the area. Officers arrived and discovered 56-year-old Derrick Herring had been shot and was deceased near the roadway. ....

CAIRO â Route 145 was down to one lane of alternating traffic after a one-car accident Sunday afternoon in Cairo. At about 12:51 p.m., Greene County 911 sent Cairo Fire Department and Town of Cairo Ambulance to 415 Route 145 after receiving reports that a car had struck a utility pole and rolled over. A car being driven north on Route 145 left the right side of the road in front of Pirelli Tire Kingdom, and struck two parked cars and a utility pole, Sgt. Richard Bush of the Town of Cairo Police Department said Monday. The force of the crash knocked down the pole and brought down live wires. The car came to rest on its side in a ditch, Bush said. ....

Council members voted unanimously Monday night to begin seeking bids for a contractor to clear out the South Broad Street building, formerly the home of the Cairo Police Department. The process will involve knocking down interior walls while keeping the structure itself intact. We re taking it down to the walls, since that would be done anyway while we re in the process of looking for an appropriate architectural plan and developer, said Mayor Howard Thrower. ....
