Morgan Weaver almost didn’t even play in Thursday’s Challenge Cup match after a controversial red card last week. But after the NWSL overturned her suspension, she became the game-winner for the Portland Thorns in a 1-0 road win over the Chicago Red Stars.
After 66 minutes of tense deadlock in Chicago, Weaver was launched upfield from a long, direct Celeste Boureille ball. Weaver collected it and cut inside to get past defender Casey Krueger before slipping a shot inside the far post. ....

The MLS regular season hasn’t yet begun, but the Portland Timbers’ 2021 is already off to a strong start as the team emphatically pushed its way into the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League, Portland’s best-ever showing in the tournament.
With a Yimmi Chara hat trick Tuesday, the Timbers pummeled Honduran side CD Marathón 5-0 in front of a small crowd of socially distanced fans at Providence Park in the second leg of the Champions League home-and-away series. After drawing in Honduras last week, the Timbers now advance to the quarterfinal round on a 7-2 aggregate score. ....

If 2020 was a disappointment for the Portland Thorns because of all the things they couldn’t do, then 2021 is already looking like a big step up.
The Thorns opened their 2021 campaign Friday in the best possible fashion: with a 2-1 win over Kansas City in the NWSL Challenge Cup, and in front of fans at Providence Park for the first time in 545 days. They also added enough controversy, drama and excitement into the final three minutes to emphatically remind onlookers: we’re not in 2020 anymore. ....

For the first time in more than a year, soccer will be played in front of fans at Providence Park.
The Portland Thorns take the field Friday night to kick off the Challenge Cup, a new tournament that will precede the NWSL regular season later this year.
They’ll host Kansas City, a new (old) expansion team joining the NWSL after the sale of the Utah Royals, who used to play as FC Kansas City. (For now, the new Kansas City team is unnamed due to the short turnaround for the 2021 season.) ....

The Timbers opened the CONCACAF Champions League on Tuesday with a thrilling back-and-forth draw in Honduras to C.D. Marathón that sets the stage for a tense return leg in Portland. With the 2-2 draw, a win for either side next week at Providence Park will determine the two-leg winner to advance to the Champions League quarterfinal round.
Diego Valeri pulled the Timbers ahead in the 59th minute off a gorgeous arching free kick off that bounced off the crossbar, off the Marathón goalkeeper Denovan Torres’ back and into goal. It would have been Valeri’s 97th career goal for the Timbers, but will officially be recorded as an own goal by Torres. ....
