President Joe Biden’s sweeping plan to tackle poverty nationwide includes measures that aim to help Alabama teachers, parents and children.
The federal government already has directed billions of dollars of aid to Alabama schools, businesses and health care systems over the past year; the Biden administration says, though, that much more work is needed as the country recovers from the COVID-19 pandemic and addresses long-standing inequities in education, the workforce and health care.
The $1.8 trillion American Families Plan proposes $109 billion to go toward two years of free community college for students across the country and $39 billion for two years of tuition at minority-serving colleges for students with a household income of less than $125,000. ....

Joe Biden 'American Families Plan' shifts child care costs to taxpayer


“The American Jobs Plan will help millions of people get back to their jobs and their careers,” Mr. Biden said in outlining the plan, which is the second phase of his infrastructure package. The spending in the families plan is in addition to a $2.3 trillion jobs plan he released last month.
“Two million women have dropped out of the workforce during this pandemic, too often because they couldn’t get the care they need for their family, their children,” said Mr. Biden, citing an estimate by the left-leaning National Women’s Law Center.
To pay for his infrastructure proposals, Mr. Biden wants to raise taxes that he said would force the wealthy and corporations to start paying their “fair share.” ....

President Joe Biden’s American Jobs Plan is expansive and ambitious, a $2 trillion infrastructure package that includes money for roads and bridges, home health care for seniors, measures to fight climate change, and more.
One thing it doesn’t say much about, though, is child care.
The omission is notable given that on the campaign trail, Biden emphasized that child care
is infrastructure and that creating good jobs in this sector is part of building a strong economy. ....
