It s been a long time coming for the Westport Babe Ruth Baseball League, but the boys brought home for the league s very first time the Cal Ripken championship. On Friday night, the stands at the Westport High School upper field were packed with parents and fans who showed up to support the hometown team. Comprised of nine-and-10-year-old players, the 10U team matched up against New Bedford s South End Youth Athletic Association, with Westport earning a 6-2 victory. Heading into the tournament, Westport was undefeated, but eventually lost the first matchup with New Bedford. Luckily for them, it was a double-elimination, leaving them as the only team to not lose twice. Other teams in the tournament included Somerset, Raynham, Freetown-Lakeville and Fairhaven-Acushnet. ....
WESTPORT The school district’s nurses and administrators recently recommended that all community school students learn remotely for the first two weeks of January. The School Committee on Thursday did not support the plan, so district students will continue to report to in-person learning following the holiday break. Students can continue to learn remotely, if they prefer. The holiday break begins Dec. 23, with an early dismissal, and it concludes on Jan. 3. School will be back in session on Jan. 4. Interim School Superintendent Thomas Aubin said that school nurses were recommending a remote period because the school district and community at large witnessed a spike in positive COVID-19 cases after Thanksgiving. Aubin said that with a long holiday break, there is a stronger likelihood that some families will travel, increasing their exposure. ....
