Rudy Gunter passed away November 20, 2020 surrounded by his loving family after a long, courageous battle with ALS complicated by the COVID-19 virus. He was born June 13, 1940 in Kemmerer, Wyoming, the sixth child of Rudolph Gunter and Domenica Mecca. He graduated from Kemmerer High School in 1958 and then attended the University of Wyoming, where he graduated in 1962. Rudy’s teaching career began in 1963 at Green River High School in Green River Wyoming, where he taught industrial arts. His basketball coaching career started as Freshman coach, eventually leading to his position as head basketball coach where he remained for several successful years including a state championship team. After retiring from coaching, he focused on teaching art and eventually headed the art program where he mentored hundreds of budding artists and became a well-known artist and sculptor in his own right. His love of basketball and art led to one of his greatest achievements, a bronze statue ....
June 1, 2021 The next time Donny Proffit sets foot on the floor of the Ford Wyoming Center formerly the Casper Events Center it will be in a pair of cowboy boots and not a pair of wrestling shoes. For Karson Bradley, she won’t fret too much about competing in collegiate rodeo’s biggest event she’s been there before. Proffit will return to Casper this time for the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR) June 13-19 as a member of the University of Wyoming rodeo team, not as a four-time state champion wrestler for Kemmerer High School (KHS). For Bradley, from Big Piney, this will be her second time around under the spotlight she knows the Ford Wyoming Center’s dirt arena well. ....
Two time wrestling state champion, Conner Vickery from Kemmerer High School, is using a raffle in order to raise money for an opportunity to go wrestle and train in Greece. The junior qualified to be on the Wyoming National Team who is using this cultural exchange program to send athletes to the European country to practice in different styles of the sport. He has to raise $4400 and the trip is in mid-June. “Basically we fly out to Greece,” Vickery said. “We train with the international Greece team and a couple of other European teams there.” He says raising the funds and training in different styles is his main focus right now. In the United States you commonly see Folkstyle, but he will be practicing and learning other types of wrestling. ....
