Brookfield Renewable Temporarily Shuts Down 3 Kennebec River Dams To Protect Salmon Migration

Brookfield spokeswoman Miranda Kessel says the fourth dam, Weston, pictured above, will continue to operate, because studies show the Salmon stand a better chance of survival passing through the turbines than when they spill over the top of that dam.
Brookfield Renewable has shut down three of its four hydroelectric dams on the Kennebec River, after federal regulators warned that the company was in danger of killing endangered Atlantic Salmon without authorization.
Brookfield is at the center of a dispute with conservationists and government agencies over whether some or all of the dams should be removed, in order to help the salmon survive, or whether other actions such as installing fish ladders or elevators can do the job. ....

Earlier this month, state regulators backed off a proposed plan for managing the Kennebec River, whose cool upstream waters conservationists see as critical for the recovery of endangered Atlantic salmon.
The plan included recommendations that the river s four hydroelectric dams be taken down a move the dam s owners and other stakeholders say could wreak economic havoc.
As the state begins a new stakeholder process, some are looking to successful dam removal efforts elsewhere in Maine that have restored historic sea-run fish populations and even encouraged new economic activity. But prospects of a similar outcome for the Kennebec are murky at best. ....

GARDINER Dozens of volunteers picked up plastic coffee cups, cigarette butts, tires, construction debris, food wrappers, masks, and random bits of plastic and anything else found improperly discarded in a spring cleanup Saturday in downtown Gardiner and along Cobbossee Stream. Participants noted, however, that their efforts weren’t really just about cleaning up those two specific areas.
Saturday morning 676 pounds of garbage was collected by 31 volunteers who took part  in a cleanup organized by Upstream, a local nonprofit dedicated to restoring sea-run fish passage on Cobbossee Stream. The cleanup was tied to the upcoming Earth Day and focused on cleaning up the Cobbossee Stream corridor. The group was not alone, though, as still more vo ....
