Busy year for telecom sector

In terms of the Big Three celcos, Maxis Bhd remains the leader in the postpaid market (39% subscriber share) while DiGi.Com Bhd keeps a stronghold in the prepaid front (40% subscriber share).
PETALING JAYA: Less downside pressure on average revenue per user (arpu) is expected for the telecom sector over the next few quarters with the overall increase in activity.
Kenanga Research said this could translate to more meaningful arpu numbers as more consumers’ outdoor movement could lead to less indoor/broadband dependency for data needs.
The research house said this could also reflect positively towards subscriber numbers but possibly still leaning to the prepaid segment as “unlimited” data plans have developed a following, which could lose its lustre as affordability concerns wane away. ....

Fund managers share their views on outlook and challenges

Hitting reset button
IT was a year full of surprises and of many unprecedented events. Who knew a virus outbreak could shut down global economies, force countries to close their borders and ground airlines?
The market crash in March was a pandemic-induced one rather than a market failure like what happened during the Global Financial Crisis, Asian Financial Crisis and the dotcom bubble.
But the recovery in the stock market was surprisingly quick and investors are now looking at further pricing in an economic recovery, on the back of the hope that the Covid-19 vaccine becomes widely available.
Three fund managers spoke to StarBizWeek on their take on the outlook and challenges for 2021. ....

Cover Story: Questions over FELDA's plans for FGV

LAST Friday, market talk had it that the Federal Land Development Authority (FELDA) had secured the requisite funding to buy the stakes held by Kumpulan Wang Persaraan (Diperbadankan), or KWAP, and Urusharta Jamaah Sdn Bhd (UJSB) in FGV Holdings Bhd.
The funding included the amount needed to buy up all the shares not under FELDA and parties acting in concert with it. Details of the funding, however, were unavailable but one source familiar with the matter said that FELDA obtained the loan as it had assets in the form of land.
“I would think it’s a club deal (a consortium of banks), no single financial institution would take up such a loan … or it (the privatisation) could be government funded,” one source says. ....

Ringgit to be 3.95 against US dollar by end-2021, says Kenanga Research

KUALA LUMPUR (Dec 21): The US dollar to the ringgit exchange rate is expected to strengthen to 3.95 by the end of next year, according to Kenanga Research.
In a note to clients, the research house said the local currency appears to remain firm relative to the greenback due to a weakening dollar index following the US Federal Reserve s (Fed) stance to maintain its current policy on its bond purchase programme and interest rate policy until the end of next year and going into 2022.
“The huge stimulus and fiscal spending along with the general optimism about the Covid-19 vaccine roll-out would likewise support the ringgit,” Kenanga Research said. ....
