The 2020 Labor Day fires as well as recent ice storms have reinforced the need for a significant investment in a resilient power grid,” Sen. Ron Wyden said. ....

Eugene has a club for that If you ve ever driven by University Park in Eugene, you may have noticed a group throwing small balls around the softball diamond there. The game is called pétanque. The current version of the sport originated in 1907 in Provence, France. It is similar to bocce and involves players or teams “shooting or pointing” boules (metal balls) toward a target ball. “You have to be over 60 and have prostate problems to play,” joked Dan Claycomb, 68, after shooting a ball toward the target. His opponent in the game this day, Ray Peterson, 71, quipped back, “Don’t use that quote,” he said, laughing. “We are trying to encourage women and young people to join us.” ....

Credit McKenzie Community Development Corporation The McKenzie Community Development Corporation is giving out holiday boxes to 400 McKenzie River area residents featuring local blueberries, honey, and hazelnuts. Communications Director Alice Bonasio acknowledges the boxes won’t solve long-term recovery issues, but that’s not the goal. “No single gift is ever going to fix what people lost. The enormity of it is enough to really get you down,” said Bonasio. “So, this idea is a small gesture, but it’s highlighting what there is in the way of good and the way of hope for the community and by the community.” ....
