Denny Christianson, beloved Canadian jazz educator, dies at 80

By Adam Feibel Humber College Denny Christianson, the jazz musician and educator who appeared on more than 250 albums and inspired generations of Canadian jazz students along the way through his work at Humber College, has died at the age of 78. Rising to prominence as the leader of the 18-piece Denny Christianson Big Band in Montreal in 1981, Christianson was a widely acclaimed trumpeter, flugelhornist, arranger, composer, conductor and bandleader with a career that lasted several decades. In 2001, Christianson became the director of music studies at Humber College in Toronto, where he made a lasting impression on the past, present and future of jazz in Canada. He retired in 2018.

Four iconic Chet Baker records reissued on vinyl By Adam Feibel Craft Recordings Four of Chet Baker’s most beloved albums from the late ’50s are being reissued on vinyl this year. Craft Recordings is repressing the jazz legend’s catalogue with the renowned Riverside record label between 1958 and 1959. Those four albums are Chet Baker in New York, Chet and Chet Baker Plays the Best of Lerner and Loewe. Each album was cut from its original analog master tapes and has been pressed on 180-gram vinyl. Stories of Standards is sponsored by ListenUp “Moment’s Notice” (1957) by John Coltrane was featured on Blue Train and recorded 9/15/1957 for Blue Note under an agreement with Blue Note Records founder Alfred Lion. The recording artists included John Coltrane on tenor saxophone, Paul Chambers on double bass, Kenny Drew on piano, Curtis Fuller on trombone, Philly Joe Jones on drums and Lee Morgan on trumpet. All songs on the album were written by Coltrane save one (“I’m Old Fashioned: by Jerome Kern and Johnny Mercer) and the album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999. While Coltrane only recorded “Moment’s Notice” once, other artists have regarded “Moment’s Notice” as a standard.
