Polish and Israeli Diplomats Jointly Commemorate the 78th Anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising

This year, for the first time in history, the foreign ministers of Poland and Israel, Professor Zbigniew Rau and Lt. Gen. (res.) Gabi Ashkenazi, and both countries’ ambassadors in EU member states and across the globe, have come together to commemorate the 78th anniversary
of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising. From Brazil to Europe, from Kazakhstan to Vietnam, more than 50 Polish and Israeli ambassadors are marking this special anniversary together by taking part in the Daffodil Campaign, organized by the POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews. This effort by Polish and Israeli diplomats is an opportunity to raise awareness of the history of the heroes and heroines of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, while also highlighting the international dimension of Polish-Israeli collaboration in commemorating its tragic history. ....

April 19, 2021, is the 78th anniversary of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising, and a good time to take aim at the myth that Jews went “like sheep to the slaughter.” Warsaw stands alongside Auschwitz as a symbol of the Holocaust: As Auscwhitz is an eternal condemnation of the perpetrators and all they stood for, so Warsaw is a symbol of Jewish struggle and resistance.
That struggle was not confined to the ghetto, nor to Warsaw, nor even to Poland, and it did not end with the uprising. ....

In December 1970, the West German chancellor, Willy Brandt, visited the Monument to the Ghetto Heroes in Warsaw, Poland. The memorial honors Jewish resistance to Nazi occupiers in 1943, a revolt that took place after the Third Reich started deporting Jewish people in droves to death camps the year before. The Nazis brutally suppressed the uprising, killing or deporting more than 50,000 people in the process.
Brandt agreed to lay a wreath at the monument to honor the murdered Jewish freedom fighters. But when the moment arrived, he did something completely unexpected. He set the wreath down and then knelt on the cold, wet ground in silence. Everyone was stunned. “Under the weight of recent history,” Brandt said, “I did what people do when words fail them. In this way, I commemorated millions of murdered people.” ....

A Jewish prayer for the souls of people murdered in the Holocaust echoed Wednesday over the site where the Warsaw ghetto stood during World War II as a world gripped by the COVID-19 pandemic observed the 76th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.
Most International Holocaust Remembrance Day commemorations were being held online this year because of the coronavirus, including the annual ceremony at the site of the former Auschwitz death camp, where the Nazis killed 1.1 million people in occupied Poland. ....
