A professor in human nutrition and medicine says the latest nationwide snapshot of diabetes has left him dumbstruck.
Each month, around 50 people lose a limb to the disease and New Zealand s current cost of treatment sits at more than $2.1 billion a year.
A PwC report commissioned by Diabetes New Zealand, the university of Otago s Edgar Diabetes and Obesity Research Centre and Healthier Lives National Science Challenge, predicts things are set to get a lot worse.
It claims the number of people with type 2 diabetes could rise by as much as 90 percent across the next two decades inflicting a staggering bill on taxpayers. ....

Nearly 140,000 voters left GOP in 25 states in January
Nearly 140,000 voters left the Republican Party in 25 states in January, according to an analysis of public voting records obtained by The Hill.
Some of the steepest drops in Republican Party affiliation were seen in California, where more than 33,000 registered voters left the GOP; Pennsylvania, where more than 12,000 voters defected; and Arizona, where more than 10,000 Republicans changed their voter registration.
And while California has morphed into a reliably blue state, Pennsylvania and Arizona are key battlegrounds where Republicans need support.
About 79,000 Democrats also left their party in January, according to public records. ....

Most contenders in Georgia s Senate runoff elections have reacted to reports detailing a physical altercation that took place during a rally in Stockbridge on Saturday morning. The incident occurred as civilians participated in a Democratic Get Out the Vote event, according to local news outlets that acquired information from county police. Almost 3 in 4 say pandemic is getting worse: Gallup
Nearly 3 in 4 Americans said in a new poll that they believe the coronavirus pandemic is getting worse.
The survey, released Thursday by Gallup, found that 73 percent of respondents said that the coronavirus situation in the U.S. today is either a lot or a little worse. That percentage is up 12 points from a Gallup poll earlier in the fall, when 61 percent agreed that the pandemic was worsening.
Across political parties, 95 percent of Democrats, 71 percent of independents and 46 percent of Republicans said in the new poll that the pandemic is getting worse across the country. ....
