Today’s Image of the Day from NASA Earth Observatory features the coastal region of Ghana, West Africa. The photograph includes the Volta River Delta, the Keta Lagoon, and the Gulf of Guinea. Ghana has a tropical climate with mangrove forests and approximately 90 lagoons that support commercial fishing and help sustain local communities. The Volta River is one of multiple vast river systems that flow across Ghana. According to ESA, these rivers support the farms that sustain the country’s economy, producing crops such as yams, grains, cocoa, and oil palms. The coastal communities of Ghana are severely threatened by sea level rise and coastal erosion. The shoreline has been eroding at rates of up to two meters per year. ....

Ghana celebrates World Wetlands Day LISTEN FEB 3, 2021 Ghana has taking part in the celebration of World Wetlands Day with the focus of tackling the growing freshwater crisis that threatens people and the planet. A statement issued by the environmental NGO, A Rocha Ghana, in commemoration of the day mentioned some of the key threats to Ghana’s Wetlands to include Forest loss, illegal mining (Galamsey), indiscriminate dumping of waste, wetlands conversion into other land use forms and pollution from industrial waste. “We are facing a growing freshwater crisis that threatens people and our planet. We use more freshwater than nature can replenish, and we are destroying the ecosystem that water and all life depend on most – Wetlands”, the statement said. ....
