Birds of Saudi Arabia: Malaki Dam Lake

Malaki Dam Lake Malaki Dam (also known as Malakiyah, Wadi Jizan Dam or Hakima Dam) is probably the largest and most variable expanse of freshwater habitats in the southwestern provinces of Saudi Arabia. This area is a large lake (17 04.72N, 42 97.88E) at the edge of the Asir foothills, 15km east of Abu Arish. It is fed by four main wadis and at high water levels the lake spreads to over ten square kilometres and has a large catchment area extending south into Yemen. The reservoir is bordered to the north by basaltic lava plains and to the south several rocky outcrops which form the edge of Wadi Juwwah, another excellent birding

Charadrius prevails

When I first visited Mallorca (1990), the Kentish Plover was a bird high on my list to see, and on day two we had gone to the Albufereta Marsh between Puerto Pollensa and Alcudia. I was with my late father and we parked up and started the walk in towards the reserve. I remember the moment as if it were now, the little open field on the right had been tilled and there towards the top end were some little waders scurrying about. They were a pair of Kentish Plovers and I was overjoyed. This was a new species for me and the pictures in the books did not disappoint. Armed with

Birds of Saudi Arabia: European Bee-eaters moving through – Dhahran Hills

European Bee-eaters moving through – Dhahran Hills The ‘patch’ has livened up slightly now September has arrived. As the temperature start to drop slightly, more passage migrants start to occur and the first groups of European Bee-eaters are now moving through the camp, although they have been seen elsewhere in the Eastern Province earlier. Normally you are alerted to their presence by their calls and then often they come down to rest in small numbers. The largest group I have seen so far is 23 birds with 35 birds being the most seen in a single trip. Many of the birds are juveniles but they still add a splash of colour to the days birding.
