GUWAHATI: The Congress screening committee, for finalising the names of candidates for the upcoming Assam assembly elections, is set to give a final shape to the list for the first phase by Friday. Led by veteran Congressman and former Maharashtra chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan, CM, the panel has been conducting marathon meetings with district and block Congress committee leaders to take their final view on probable candidates, whose names have got the nod of the Pradesh Election Committee of the Congress. MLAs Kamleshwar Patel and Dipika Pandey Singh are other members of the screening committee. For the first time, the panel has come to Assam, instead of calling the state leaders to Delhi. but the final list will be declared by the AICC in New Delhi. The first list is likely to be announced by Saturday, Congress sources said. ....
RJD Assam state chief Shonarul Shah Mustafa (right) with Tejashwi Yadav PATNA: Bihar’s main opposition party RJD, which has already announced to contest assembly polls in Assam in alliance with the like-minded parties, on Sunday staked its claim on 16 constituencies which have sizeable number of Hindi and Bhojpuri speaking population. “In Assam, we have identified 16 assembly constituencies which have more than 50,000 Hindi speaking voters. Most of the people in these constituencies have roots in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh. If the RJD is allowed to put its candidates from such seats in alliance with the like-minded parties, the alliance of opposition parties can give a tough contest to the BJP and its allies in Assam polls,” RJD’s national general secretary Shyam Rajak told TOI over phone. ....
Representative image GUWAHATI: Lack of health infrastructure to deal with possible adverse affects after immunization is the principal reason why the Covid vaccination drive cannot be fanned out to rural and remote areas immediately. There was overwhelming response to the third phase of the drive beginning March 1, especially in government hospitals. But no one in the health department can say when this drive would reach the level of health sub-centre in the villages. The vaccine is available in seven medical colleges, district-level hospitals and some primary health centres (PHCs) till the cold chain points exist. Following the Centre’s guidelines, the Assam government on Wednesday allowed private hospitals to administer the doses in conformation with government norms. ....
