GUWAHATI: Price rise is likely to be a major poll issue in Assam. In almost all middle-class households, this is a common complaint. As successive governments have failed to address unemployment, the next best thing the people seem to be hoping for is a government that can arrest this rise. For homemaker Bobita Thakuria (55), the “unusual surge” in the prices of pulses and mustard oil is unimaginable. Her husband Hemanta Baruah runs a retail shop, and the income from that feeds the family of four. She prepares the household budget and says that a 95% hike in prices of the most used kitchen commodities will compel even “apolitical homemakers” to think politically while voting. ....
Prithiraj Rava submitted his nomination earlier this week. GUWAHATI: Asom Gana Parishad has taken a leap of faith by fielding Prithiraj Rava instead of Brindaban Goswami from Tezpur. Rava is the son of cultural icon and communist revolutionary Bishnu Prasad Rava, and AGP hopes that he will do well at the hustings riding on the aura of his late father. Bishnu Rava had spent many years underground as a leader of Revolutionary Communist Party of India before joining Communist Party of India in 1950s. In 1967, he contested the assembly elections as an Independent and won. He was a lifelong socialist. ....
NPP chief and Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma GUWAHATI: National People s Party (NPP) led by Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma is ready to contest in about 15 seats in three-phase Assam elections. NPP will also fight in the seats where its ally in the NDA, BJP, has also fielded candidates. But the state leadership of the party said that they want to give voters a chance to vote for a young party, which is ready to bring youthfulness in Indian politics. The NPP is the only party from the northeast, which has the recognition of a “National Party”. NPP has fielded candidates in Chabua, Badarpur, Jorhat, Baithalangso and Naoboicha seats for the first phase, in most of which indigenous tribes and communities play a decisive role in the elections. Some of these are A-category seats for the BJP where the saffron alliance has a high chance of winning, according to the BJP insiders. PM Narendra Modi will address an election rally in Chabua in the Dibrugarh district on March 20, which ....
Congress not willing to give BPF chief Hagrama Mohilary a free hand GUWAHATI: Militant-turned politician Hagrama Mohilary’s Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), which was dumped by the BJP from the NDA last year, has demanded all 12 assembly seats in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) from its new grand alliance big brother, the Congress. Despite low prospects of winning, especially after its dismal show in the recently-held Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) polls, the Congress wants a few seats for itself. This may create a fresh conflict between the two parties, which stitched an alliance with the common goal of ousting the BJP. The Congress-AIUDF led grand alliance in Assam got a major boost with the induction of BPF in their fold soon after the poll dates were announced last month. ....
