Former chief minister Tarun Gogoi-led Congress returned to power in Assam in 2006 with the help of BPF. With 56 MLAs, Congress fell short of the majority mark in the 126-member assembly that year, where BPF with 11 MLAs helped in the formation of a Congress-led coalition government. ....
Suspended BJP leader Dipanjali Kakati after her arrest on Saturday GUWAHATI: Dipanjali Kakati, a BJP leader who was suspended from the party for allegedly assaulting an on-duty a police officer in Tinsukia district last November, was arrested on Saturday from her residence at Dirak Powai in the district. Kakati had assaulted sub-inspector Apurba Das inside Kakopathar Police Station after the police officer refused to set free a culprit who was brought to the police station for questioning. “The incident was recorded in CCTV on the basis of which she has been arrested,” a police officer said. Kakati had been on the run after her pre-arrest bail plea granted initially was cancelled later. The BJP leader has been booked under Section 332 of the Indian Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt to deter a public servant from his duty. ....

The party, which distributed leaflets highlighting the government’s achievements and welfare steps taken for the people during its door-to-door campaign, has formed five drama groups comprising 10 actors each for the campaign through street plays. “The groups will travel across the state and perform street plays highlighting government’s achievements and welfare steps taken for the people. Drama or plays being a mode of entertainment will help in reaching the common people at the micro level. If there is social media to reach a particular section of society, then there are street plays and music to reach another section which is not familiar with advanced technologies,” popular Assamese actor Jatin Bora, who rejoined the party in August last ....
Representative image GUWAHATI: The Election Commission on Tuesday issued the notification for the first phase of assembly election in Assam to be held on March 27 in 47 constituencies spread over 12 districts. These constituencies account for over 80 lakh voters. The first phase constituencies have the biggest concentration of tea garden voters who will decide the fate of parties in as many as 27 seats.
