Stormont Vail Events Center renovations has been 10 years and $35.7M

The process of renovating the Stormont Vail Events Center has essentially come to a close as 10 years of work has mostly been completed.
Kellen Seitz, general manager of the Stormont Vail Event’s Center for Spectra Venue Management, said work is 99% complete all that remains is landscaping delayed by the recent rainy weather.
“This was long overdue,” said Shawnee County commissioner Kevin Cook at Thursday’s commission meeting. “This gives us a completely new facility to be able to enjoy.”
The location served as the Kansas Expocentre after improvements were made in the 1980s, but Cook said the center hadn t see many improvements since. The area used to serve as the location of the Kansas Free Fair and the Topeka Fairgrounds. ....

Washburn Tech debuts advanced manufacturing program at east campus

A partnership between Washburn Tech, Mars Wrigley and the Kansas Board of Regents will expand training opportunities in high-paying jobs for northeast Kansans.
The technical college on Wednesday afternoon unveiled an expansion of its certified technician program to be offered for the first time at the school s east campus, thanks to a $50,000 grant from Mars Wrigley and a $25,475 grant from the Regents.
It s a program we think is an important step in bringing jobs into Topeka, said Washburn University president Jerry Farley. We will bring other people into Topeka because of what we can offer here.
While the technical college offers a similar program to military personnel at Fort Riley, the program s introduction at the east campus will help expand that training to anyone in northeast Kansas, said Chaz Havens, director of Washburn Tech East. ....

Businesses in Shawnee County can soon apply for local relief

The Joint Economic Development Organization set aside $700,000 in December to help small businesses. Its small business task force has approved the application process that soon will allow most businesses in the county to apply for aid.
The application won’t be active on any one specific day but must be live by April 19.
“I wholeheartedly believe that we are going to make a difference in some local businesses,” said task force member and Shawnee County commissioner Aaron Mays.
Who is eligible for the grant?
This grant will be less stringent than Topeka’s small business relief fund, so much so that Corrie Wright, Topeka s director of housing services, said the city might contact businesses rejected from Topeka’s program and encourage them to apply for the JEDO program. ....

Topeka City Council member Mike Lesser is running for re-election in District 9 for a pretty simple reason: He has more work to do. His first term, he said, was stained by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“My goal is to make Topeka a better place for our families,” he said. “I want my kids to want to stay in Topeka, and the way you do that is by good jobs, supporting business and bringing quality of life activities to Topeka.”
Lesser said he spent most of his life in the city and once interned for former Sen. Bob Dole. The Seaman High School and Washburn University graduate works as president of Peoples Insurance Group. ....
