Stiff Resistance against Second Wave of #EndSARS Protest


Chiemelie Ezeobi reports that the second wave of the #EndSARS protest was met with stiff resistance from the police in Lagos as the protesters, under the aegis of #OccupyLekkiTollgate stormed the street to register their grouse about the decision of the judicial panel to reopen the Lekki Tollgate
Last week Saturday, the second wave of the #EndSARS protest began in Lagos under the auspices of #OccupyLekkiTollGate, with more than 40 protesters arrested and dehumanised by police operatives attached to the Lagos State Police Command.

Although the sobriquet #EndSARS did not start recently, it gained momentum during last year’s nationwide protests against the now disbanded Special Anti Robbery Squad (SARS) and police brutality in general. Last Tuesday, February 9, 2021, a workshop on community policing held in Lagos titled “Mass sensitisation of the members of the public on community policing” with the theme “Understanding community policing: A framework for action.” Organised by the Nigeria Police Force in collaboration with two private sector organisations – Unite Consult Limited and C. O. Luke & Co. – the workshop was originally scheduled to be held at the Adeyemi-Bero Hall, Lagos State Secretariat, Alausa, Ikeja but ended up at the Banquet Hall of the Governor’s office within the same vicinity. The Fulani settlers in Eggua community of Yewa North Local Government Area in Ogun State have begged for peaceful coexistence with their Yoruba hosts, promising to identify killer herdsmen among them.
A resident of the area, who spoke on condition of anonymity, when recounting how the arrival of Yoruba activist, Sunday Igboho, led to the burning of the house of the Seriki Fulani in Eggua, told SaharaReporters on Wednesday. ....

The Lagos State Judicial Panel on Restitution for victims of SARS and other related matters on Tuesday listed nine petitions, for hearing.
In the first petition of Omeli Humphrey Darlington VS the Nigeria Police, the panel resumed for the adoption of the final written addresses by counsel for the petitioner, Olukoya Ogungbeje and counsel for the respondent, Cyril Ejiofor.
Ejiofor representing the Nigerian Police adopted his final address but contested paragraph 4.3 of the petitioner’s address.
The panel then reserved its decision after saying that it will notify lawyers when same is ready. ....
