Arts Organizations Across Germany Are Partaking in a Study to Investigate—and Curb—Their Carbon Emissions

Nineteen arts organizations in Germany are partaking in a government-sponsored project to get a deeper understanding of their carbon footprints, and how they can be curbed.
The project is paid for by the Federal Cultural Foundation, a major German funding body, and was organized in November. This week, it announced that an assessment of its results will be shared by spring.
Among the organizations taking part are the Lenbachhaus in Munich, the Museum Folkwang in Essen, and the Dresden State Art Collections. Theaters, libraries, music halls, and historic sites, such as the Sachsenhausen former concentration camp that is now a memorial, are also participating. ....

The Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) published its annual list of the “Top Ten Worst Anti-Semitic and Anti-Israel Incidents,” which ranks the worst anti-Semitic and anti-Israel people, organizations, and incidents the Jewish world has encountered in the past year.
1. The anti-Semitic conspiracy theories on the Coronavirus (COVID-19) spread on social media topped the list for 2020.

“As representatives of public cultural and research institutions in Germany, we share a mandate from the state to promote arts and culture, historical research, and democratic education and to make these accessible to the general public,” their statement began. “Toward this end, we rely on a public sphere that welcomes controversial debates in accordance with the norms of the German constitution.”
Their manifesto continued: “We are further committed to paying particular attention to marginalized and disregarded voices that stand for cultural diversity and critical perspectives.”
According to the signatories, among them the heads of the Goethe Institute, the Humboldt Forum, the Berlin Institute for Advanced Study, and the Federal Cultural Foundation, “At the center of our initiative lies a common struggle against antisemitism, racism, right-wing extremism, and any form of violent religious fundamentalism.” ....

The School for Unlearning Zionism is one endeavor whose funding was cut thanks to a German parliamentary resolution.
(December 15, 2020 / JNS) At a news conference in Berlin on Thursday, the directors of 32 academic and cultural institutions some in attendance and others via Zoom presented an open letter to protest the May 2019 Bundestag resolution categorizing BDS as anti-Semitic.
The resolution was based on the “working definition of anti-Semitism,” formulated by the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA) and adopted in 2017 ago by the German government. The IHRA definition includes a clause stating that manifestations of the phenomenon “might include the targeting of the state of Israel, conceived as a Jewish collectivity.” ....
